Functions of Light

There is no single light fixture that gives you everything you need to illuminate a room properly. The trick is to use a variety of light sources to create a flexible, inviting space.

Living Room Lighting

Here are the four basic functions of light:

Task

Task Lighting 1

Task lighting is lighting by which you do work.

Where do you need it?

  • anywhere you are performing a task:
  • cooking, reading, cleaning

What are some examples?

  • goose neck sconces (as shown above)
  • under-cabinet lighting (as shown below)

Task Lighting 2

Ambient

Ambient Lighting 1

Ambient lighting is indirect lighting creating a warm glow.

Where do you need it?

  • anywhere you want to create a dramatic setting
  • living room, bedroom, theater room

What are some examples?

  • tape lighting (as shown above)
  • sconce lighting (as shown below)

Ambient Lighting 2

Accent

Accent Lighting 1

Accent lighting is used to highlight objects.

Where do you need it?

  • anywhere you want to add depth and dimension
  • highlighting artwork, sculptures, landscape

What are some examples?

  • directional landscape lighting (as shown above)
  • picture lighting (as shown below)

Accent Lighting 2

Decorative

Decorative Lighting 1

Decorative lighting adds sparkle and design to a room.

Where do you need it?

  • anywhere you want to add glamour:
  • living room, bathroom, bedroom

What are some examples?

  • modern chandelier (as shown above)
  • pendant lighting (as shown below)
